Rangecookers Guide To.....Keeping Your Range Cooker Clean
Cooking on a range cooker is perfect due to their size, zones and compartments, making it so easy to cook multiple dishes at once. However, behind the fun is the cleaning...but how can you clean a range cooker properly so it continues to perform at its best?
It is best to try and keep the cooker as clean as possible after use to prevent the oven cavity and cooking surfaces from having piles of dirt and dust build up, making them even more difficult to clean. Since range cookers have many different components and additional cookware, it can be hard to make sure you have cleaned everything. So, let's start with the hob...
The Hob
When something spills or boils over on the hob, try and wipe it up as soon as possible to prevent it from burning onto the cooker. However, be careful if the hob is still hot. The best thing to clean an enamel or stainless-steel hob is some hot soapy water and a clean cloth. Any of the more stubborn stains can be removed gently with a nylon scourer and cream cleaner if needed, however if the finish on your hob is stainless-steel make sure to use a stainless-steel cream cleaner.
The Oven Door
When it comes to cleaning the window on your oven door, it is important to get it right due to it being part of the aesthetics within the room. If the oven is spotless but the glass is dirty, the oven's interior will look like it needs a clean. You can begin cleaning the glass with hot soapy water and a soft cloth. To remove more stubborn stains, use a cream cleaner and a soft scourer to get the best results.
The Oven Interior
The oven shelves are a great place to start. If you have a dishwasher, it is nice and easy as they can often go in there. If you don't have a dishwasher, some hot soapy water will do the job perfectly. Let the shelves soak for a little while before wiping for the best results, as this will let the grease lift off. When finished cleaning the rest of the oven you can place the shelves back in.
The oven walls are often trickier to clean but with some simple steps it can be made a lot easier. Do not use any abrasive cleaners on the oven walls as they can cause lasting damage. If your oven walls need a particularly good scrub, mix 1/2 a cup of baking soda with 2 to 3 tablespoons of water. Use as much of either product as you need until you have a spreadable paste. Wearing gloves, spread the paste around the inside of your oven including the walls, the top and bottom, and the door. If you have an electric oven, do not spread the paste on the heating element and if you have a gas oven, do not spread the paste over the section where the gas is released. Allow the paste to sit for a few hours and then come back to wipe down the surfaces with a damp cloth.
Brass Burner Caps
All brass tends to tarnish with use, so using a metal polish to get these gleaming again is a great idea. Polishing them frequently is better than giving them a deep clean every couple of months so try and stay on top of keeping the burners fresh. It is also a good idea to leave the burner caps upside down in lemon juice and vinegar for a few hours to help eliminate any stubborn marks.
Pan Stands and Wok Rings
These are both made of cast iron and will mostly remain clean due to the high heat they experience. These can be lifted off and given a deep clean in the sink and then placed back when the rest of the cooker has been cleaned. Clean with a damp cloth and some detergent, along with a plastic scouring pad.
